Bergpak Packhouse – Suiderland Plase

This flagship agricultural development forms part of Suiderland Plase’s expanding citrus and table grape operations in the Western Cape. The Bergpak Packhouse was designed to support high-volume post-harvest handling, sorting, and cold chain processing, reinforcing the client’s position as a leading South African producer, packer, and exporter within the citrus sector.

Suiderland Plase operates with a strong foundation in family-driven values and long-term empowerment, including a worker trust co-ownership model that supports community upliftment and sustainable employment. The Bergpak facility reflects this ethos through its focus on operational efficiency, sustainability, and future-ready agricultural infrastructure.

Our scope included the design, supply, fabrication, and erection of the full structural steel system, delivering a high-performance framework engineered for large-span agricultural processing environments. The structural solution was optimised through value engineering, refining the original architectural intent to improve material efficiency, reduce unnecessary steel mass, and enhance build performance without compromising structural integrity or safety standards.

The facility incorporates advanced packhouse systems including multiple-lane sorting lines, sizing equipment, and high-capacity bin cooling operations, requiring a robust steel framework capable of supporting intensive operational loads and continuous throughput.

Sustainability was a key design driver, with the facility integrating solar energy readiness and water management systems including runoff containment and treatment infrastructure. The design supports efficient water reuse for irrigation purposes, aligning with modern regenerative agricultural practices.

All structural steel components were fabricated off-site under controlled workshop conditions, ensuring precision manufacturing and consistent quality control prior to installation. This approach enabled rapid on-site assembly, reducing programme duration while maintaining high construction accuracy.
